How many times have you bought a polystyrene cup of mulled wine (or Glühwein) to warm yourself up, tasted it, and thought “meh”? You’ll never have to feel that way again if you stick to Glühkriek – yes, it’s hot mulled beer.
Everyone knows Kriek (cherry beer) is the third best beer in the world, but when it’s heated in a saucepan it’s in a whole new league.
Brewed by Liefmans, this 6% Belgian beauty comes in green paper-wrapped 750ml bottles. The ceremony is almost as good as the taste – pour the beer into a saucepan and heat gently until it simmers. Your kitchen will have a nice Christmassy aroma as your hob gets to work.
Remember to drink it while it’s hot, as like mulled wine it loses its power as it cools.
The only reason it didn’t make my top ten beers back in March 2013 is that it’s so hard to find I’ve only actually tried it twice.
I’m going to Bruges in November, and am looking forward to sipping a steaming glass of Glühkriek just as much as I’m looking forward to climbing the Belfry or cruising the canals.
Will it be served on draught out there, or available from those slow cookers full of mulled wine you see in UK bars? I doubt it, so I’ll have to hope the best off-licence in the world – Beer Gonzo (conveniently located just down the road from my house in Coventry) – stocks up.
Hello there, I have nominated you for Rhino Car Hire photo competition if you want to participate. Details on my blog! 🙂

Cheers Stefania – I could do with a new camera so will give this a go…!
Sounds yummy – even for a not much of a beer sort of person!
It certainly is yummy – if you see it, grab some (and let me know too!)
yum! great stuff. Can’t wait to have some now.
Good luck finding some – let me know if you can!
I’m not a big fun of mulled wine, preferring it unmulled but I did try mulled cider just the other day and loved that. Will definitely be trying mulled beer when I get the chance! I see you’ve written 14 posts on beer – obviously a favourite subject!
If you like cherry beer you’ll love Gluhkriek! Everyone should have a top 10 beer posts – I look forward to reading about your next nine!
🙂 hic!
Ahaha I cannot believe that you have a category for beers!!! Amazing!!! 🙂 I didn’t know kriek’s cherry beer is the third best beer in the world! It’s my absolute favorite beer! And mulled wine is another big favorite of mine, so the combination of the two must be fantastic! Have to find a place where they sell it! 🙂
Every blog should have a beer category! Glukriek can be quite hard to find – look at craft beer shops near you. Failing that, pick some up in Belgium!
